The ALPINE ANGUS Story
Alpine Angus is committed to high quality Angus cattle backed by strong performance and genetic diversity. The stud was established in 1998 and is owned by Jim and Clare Delany. Jim is the nephew of Willie and Joanne Milne, the inaugural stud managers at Alpine Angus. In early November 2011 Willie was joined by Chris Oswin who, from December 2011 will assume the role of stud manager when Willie and Joanne move to their home at Glenrowan and Willie moves to take up a role with Agrigene.
Willie brought over 40 years experience in Angus cattle in Australia to Alpine Angus. Chris Oswin is the next generation, he has 20 years experience in the breed. Willie’s knowledge and experience of the Angus breed combined with regular and systematic investment has enabled the stud to establish a female herd which in 2011 is at the forefront of the breed. Chris is extremely well equipped to take Alpine to the next stage, building on the strengths of the now well established herd and business.
Jim is responsible for overall business strategy and management and worked closely with Willie in bull selection and herd development to bring the herd to the quality position that it enjoys today. From December 2011 Chris and Elissa Oswin will live at Porepunkah with Chris managing the stud and Elissa being involved in the growing Kilnhouse business. Tim Brown and David Burrowes are valued, long standing reliable members of the Alpine Angus team. Tim and Melissa live at the Rosewhite property where the Alpine Sale complex is located. David is primarily involved in work at Porepunkah, both with the cattle and 15 acres of grapes grown and sold for wine production.
Alpine Angus farms 850 acres owned by the Delany family; 240 acres at Porepunkah at the foot of Mount Buffalo in north east Victoria and 610 acres 15 kilometres away at Rosewhite. In addition, extra land is leased near Wangaratta and at Rosewhite. The stud runs around 300 breeding age females. Each autumn, we have an on-farm bull and female sale at Rosewhite and, during the balance of the year, bull and females are available for private sale.
By continued investment and re-investment, including via females owned in the US, by the purchase of quality stud sires for in-herd use such as Lawsons Dinky-Di and Ardrossan Casino and with selected use of AI sires Alpine Angus has built up and maintained a broad and consistently high quality herd. Continued emphasis is placed on the selection and use of quality sires with strong genetics, leading performance and sound structure and temperament for use on our female herd.
