Alpine SIRES

The challenge for Alpine Angus in 2011 has been to build on the strong genetic base of which Lawson's Dinky-Di, until his loss in 2010, had been the on-farm anchor as resident stud sire.

Alpine Angus has met that challenge. We have done so by using selected sires who bring performance, power and reliability to breeding.

Each of Rito 6656 and Atahua T.J. provide valuable outcross genetics. Our current resident stud sire, Ardrossan Casino NAQC18 is now well on the way to establishing his own credentials as a top stud sire to follow and to complement Dinky Di.

In 2011 we purchased Landfall Infinity, an Admiral A2 son out of an outstanding cow family. Selected by Willie and Jim, Landfall have used Infinity’s full brother in their herd.

The Infinity side of the pedigree brings plenty of thickness and quality and moderates the otherwise high birth influence of Admiral. We see Infinity as making an important contribution to the Alpine herd from 2012.
Lawson's Dinki-DiWe purchased,Dinky-Di, VLYZ191 (AI), (ET), (TNC) pictured left in 2005, aged 14 months. He is now recognised as an outstanding Australian sire with great calving ease and carcase.

In October 2011 he remains a trait leader for calving ease, milk, EMA and IMF. Semen from Dinky Di remains available from Agri-Gene

In 2007, we secured the Australian rights to Rito 6656 OF 021 RITO 1I2, a bull selected by Willie in the US, whose phenotype and structural soundness, combined with carcass quality, backed by top EBVs, make him an excellent sire for use in our stud and others in Australia.

A number of impressive bull calves by 6656 were part of our 2011 sale and there are currently a number of “F” and “G” sons in the paddock.

Atahua TJFrom New Zealand, in 2007, we secured the Australian rights and commenced to use Atahua TJ 141-05 (ET) pictured left, in our breeding program. TJ is structurally correct with outstanding thickness, good temperament, strong in the scrotal department and represents New Zealand genetics.

Jim and Willie inspected TJ in New Zealand in 2007. He is a genuine out-cross sire who topped the 2007 New Zealand bull sales at $NZ57,000. He will reinforce structure and thickness in the Alpine Angus herd. He is an easy calving bull and his young calves show tremendous thickness and growth.

Other sires used and whose influence is seen in the Alpine herd include:
Koojan Hills Somethin’ Special, WKHW26 (AI), a 7 frame score Future Direction son, a tested non-carrier, purchased in 2003 who has made an outstanding contribution to the Alpine Angus program and whose daughters continue to breed on.

Te Maina UnlimitedTe Mania Unlimited, VTMU3271 (AI) (ET) pictured left, trait leader for milk, scrotal and IMF. Now deceased, we purchased semen rights to Unlimited when he was a young bull coming into prominence. His daughters and granddaughters are amongst the leading females in the herd.

Ardrossan Casino NAQC18 (right) who we purchased at around 16 months of age, will follow in the footsteps of Dinky Di. He is an exceptionally long bull whose frame and structure go hand in hand with strong EBVs. As at October 2011 he is a trait leader for 200, 400 and 600 days, a bull in the top 5% for all indexes, and tested AMF, NHF and CAF, Casino represents an outstanding combination.

To complement these sires we have selectively used AI sires, particularly outcross sires, including Rito 1I2, the sire of the top selling bull at our 2011 sale, Alpine Eddrick, CGKE154, whose semen we have retained for in-herd use and more recently in our 2010 and 2011 AI programs Lawsons Invincible and Te Mania Emperor.
